Defensive Driving and Hazard Awareness in NSW
Learning how to operate a vehicle is only the first step in your driving journey. The true mark of a safe driver is hazard perception and defensive driving. In NSW, understanding how to anticipate and respond to hazards is crucial not only for passing your test but for staying safe on the road for life.
What is Defensive Driving?
Defensive driving is the practice of consciously maintaining awareness of your surroundings and anticipating potential problems before they occur. It means driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.
The Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
Before you can progress to your P1 licence, you must pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). This computer-based test measures your ability to recognize dangerous situations and respond appropriately by slowing down, stopping, or maintaining a safe distance.
Creating a 'Space Cushion'
The golden rule of defensive driving is the three-second rule. Always maintain at least a three-second following distance from the vehicle in front of you. In wet weather, poor visibility, or when driving at higher speeds, extend this to four or five seconds. This space cushion gives you the critical reaction time needed if the car ahead stops suddenly.
Scanning for Hazards
Don't just stare at the bumper of the car in front of you. Keep your eyes moving:
- Scan 10-15 seconds down the road to anticipate traffic light changes or slowing traffic.
- Check your mirrors every 8-10 seconds so you know what is happening behind you.
- Watch for pedestrians near crossings, parked cars (beware of doors opening), and cyclists.
Anticipating Other Drivers' Mistakes
Never assume that another driver will do the right thing. If a car is indicating to turn into your lane, do not assume they have seen you. Hover your foot over the brake and be prepared to slow down. Defensive driving means expecting the unexpected.
