Driving Test Checklist NSW

The morning of your driving test is usually a bundle of nerves. The last thing you want is to arrive at the Service NSW centre only to be turned away because you forgot a piece of paperwork or your car has a busted taillight. Use this comprehensive checklist to ensure you are 100% prepared.

1. The Paperwork & Identification

Service NSW requires specific documentation to verify your identity and your driving experience. Missing any of these will result in an immediate cancellation of your test.

  • Your Learner Licence: Must be physical, current, and not expired or suspended.
  • Your Completed Logbook: If using a physical book, ensure the declaration of completion is signed by your supervising driver. If using an app, ensure you have tapped 'Submit' and received the confirmation email.
  • Booking Confirmation: Keep it on your phone or printed out, just in case.
  • Completed Licence Application Form: You can fill this out at the centre, but doing it at home saves time.

2. The Vehicle Roadworthiness Check

Before the examiner gets in, they will inspect the outside of the vehicle. If you are using your own car, you must check all of these the day before the test. (If you are using a Pro Learners vehicle, we guarantee these are all perfect).

  • L-Plates: Must be clearly displayed on the exterior front and rear of the car.
  • Tyres: Must have at least 1.5mm of tread depth across the whole tyre. No bald spots.
  • Lights: Headlights (high/low), indicators (front/back/sides), brake lights, and hazard lights must all work.
  • Windscreen: No major cracks obstructing the driver's view. Wipers and washer fluid must function.
  • Registration: The car must be currently registered in NSW.
  • Interior: The passenger seat must be clean and safe for the examiner, and seatbelts must function perfectly.

3. Personal Preparation

Your physical and mental state is just as important as the vehicle.

  • Appropriate Footwear: Wear flat, enclosed, thin-soled shoes. Thick boots or thongs severely impact pedal control.
  • Sunglasses: If testing in the morning or late afternoon (especially in areas with high glare like Edmondson Park), sunglasses are highly recommended.
  • Sleep: Do not cram your driving practice the night before. Get a full 8 hours of sleep to ensure your reaction times are sharp.

4. The Pre-Test Warm-Up

Never go into the test "cold". It is highly recommended to do a 45-minute warm-up drive right before your scheduled test time. Drive around the local test centre area (e.g., Liverpool) to get a feel for the current traffic conditions, warm up your steering and braking muscles, and calm your nerves.
