How to Prepare for Your First Driving Lesson
Booking your first driving lesson is an exciting milestone, but it’s completely normal to feel a mix of anticipation and anxiety. You might be wondering: "What if I crash? What if I don't know how to steer? What if the instructor yells at me?" This guide will walk you through exactly what to expect so you can step into the car with confidence.
We Start from Zero
The most important thing to remember is that we expect you to know absolutely nothing about driving. You don't need to study the pedals beforehand or know how to turn the steering wheel. Our professional instructors are trained to teach you from absolute scratch in a calm, step-by-step manner.
The Safety of Dual Controls
All Pro Learners vehicles are equipped with dual controls (a passenger-side brake and accelerator). This means that even if you make a mistake, push the wrong pedal, or steer incorrectly, your instructor has the physical ability to stop the car instantly and safely. You are in a controlled, safe environment.
What Happens in the First 60 Minutes?
1. The Setup (Cabin Drill)
We won't just throw you into traffic. The first 10-15 minutes are spent parked. Your instructor will teach you the "Cabin Drill"—how to adjust your seat, steering wheel, and mirrors perfectly to your height. They will explain where the indicators, wipers, and pedals are.
2. Moving Off and Stopping
Once you are comfortable, your instructor will take you to a very quiet, wide street or an empty car park (such as the quiet industrial estates near Gregory Hills). You will practice the simple motion of taking your foot off the brake, feeling the car creep forward, and gently pressing the brake to stop.
3. Basic Steering
You will practice simple push-pull steering techniques, making wide left and right turns at very low speeds (10-20 km/h).
What You Should Bring
- Your Learner Licence: We cannot legally let you drive without seeing your physical plastic card or your digital licence on the Service NSW app.
- Your Logbook: Have your app ready or your paper book so we can log your 3-for-1 bonus hours at the end of the lesson.
- Appropriate Footwear: Wear flat, comfortable shoes like sneakers. Do not wear thongs or high heels.
- Sunglasses: Essential for reducing glare.
Communication is Key
If you are feeling nervous, tell your instructor! Our team specializes in nervous drivers. We will adjust the pace of the lesson to ensure you never feel overwhelmed. There are no stupid questions in a driving lesson.
